Words With Possibilities

  • Daughter: I wish I could fly.
  • Me: Then fly.
  • Daughter: I can't.
  • Me: Why not?
  • Daughter: I mean by myself. Not in an airplane.
  • Me: So do I.
  • Daughter: Daddy, it's impossible.
  • Me: Who told you that?
  • Daughter: Nobody has done it, have they?
  • Me: I don't know everybody.
  • Daughter: Nobody has.
  • Me: Nobody has ever drawn that picture you just drew. You just did something impossible.
  • Daughter: ...
  • Me: Know what I think? I think maybe people CAN fly. Because it feels like we can. When I fly in my dreams, it feels right. It feels like something I should be able to do. But we don't know everything about everything. So maybe we just need to figure out what to eat, or say, or think to make us fly.
  • Daughter: Like happy thoughts?
  • Me: Exactly. But I'm pretty sure I know what to think if you DON'T want to fly.
  • Daughter: What?
  • Me: "I can't fly."
